My mom had mentioned Marfa to us before—one of those quirky desert towns that sounded too interesting to ignore. Along our drive back to California from Austin, we decided to take the small detour off of Highway 10 and onto 67. We stopped in Alpine on the way to fill up. It added a couple of hours of driving, but honestly, those we have been talking about going here for a while, so it was definitely on the list. The drive from Austin to Marfa took around 7 hours, even with the wide-open highways and 80 mph speed limits. By the time we arrived, we were ready to stretch our legs and start exploring our spot for the night.

Checking into our cool trailer at El Cosmico felt like stepping back in time. Sunny seemed to love it, though maybe just a little unsure about where we’d landed. After settling in, we wandered the grounds and had a blast checking out all the other unique trailers, teepees, and yurts scattered across the property. Each one had its quirky charm, and it made the whole place feel like a tiny village in the middle of the desert. We picked up a few drinks from the front desk and took in the beautiful and relaxing surroundings, which were all to ourselves.

We decided to go downtown to take a walk around while we waited for our table at Margaret’s.

Snapping photos of the cool cars is always a must. The Land Cruiser fits right in.

The next morning, I was honestly surprised we managed to wake up early enough to catch the sunrise. After a full day in Marfa, I thought we’d sleep right through it—but the soft desert light was too good to miss. We quickly loaded up the car, grabbed some coffee, and hit the road heading west.
Before leaving town for good, we made a few quick stops to check out some of the incredible art installations scattered around the area.
